Achiezer Update 11/16
November 16, 2020
Dear Community,

Please see below for the following updates:

COVID-19 UPDATE

While Covid-19 continues to spread throughout the Country, on a local scale, we have seen lower numbers across the Far Rockaway and Five Towns communities. Without a doubt, this is thanks to increased mask wearing, social distancing, lack of mass gatherings and increased testing. Most importantly, this has resulted in our local schools (both in New York City and Nassau County) remaining open. Of course, there have been isolated cases which may affect certain classrooms, but by and large our schools are Baruch Hashem functioning. Our Covid-19 Task Force continues to operate with medical staff on hand to answer any non-urgent Covid-19 related questions. Should you have any specific questions that are not urgent in nature, please feel free to email us at covid19@achiezer.org.

GOVERNMENT APPRECIATION

We must take this opportunity to extend our tremendous gratitude to the leadership of the New York City Mayor's office as well as the New York City Department of Health for working hand-in-hand with our staff and the local schools, renewing safety protocols and ensuring that our children are able to attend school in a safe manner. Additionally, we are grateful to the Nassau County Health Department for working together with us in ensuring that the children of our community remain in their classrooms in a safe and responsible fashion.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION

Throughout this pandemic our dedicated army of volunteers have gone above and beyond to be there for any community member in need. While we know that this is a difficult time for everyone, we extend our appreciation to the men and women who make up this amazing team and whose selflessness knows no bounds.

HEALTH INSURANCE OPEN ENROLLMENT

For those receiving coverage through New York State of Health ("Marketplace"), the open enrollment period began on November 1 and ends on December 15, 2020. This means that hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers are either renewing or first applying for health coverage beginning on January 1, 2021. For coverage beginning on February 1, 2021 or later, applications can be completed after December 15, 2020. In past years, our Health Insurance Department has been able to accommodate the overflow requests for assistance by providing "walk in" hours. Unfortunately, we are unable to do so at this time due to the current pandemic. Our staff will be working as late into the evening as possible to try and accommodate all those that require insurance assistance. If you wish to book an appointment or require assistance with any other insurance related matter, please call us at (516) 791-4444 x 3 or email us at healthinsurance@achiezer.org.

WESTWOOD FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT DIVISION

Our Westwood Financial Management Division is once again producing a special evening for young couples married for five years or less. This incredible and vital presentation will include opening divrei bracha from Rabbi Shay Schachter and hands on guidance from our senior financial management advisor, Mrs. Stacey Zrihen. Please email awartelsky@achiezer.org for more information about this event.

HOSPITAL RESPITE ROOMS

While we hope they are never needed, we wish to remind the community that our Hospital Respite Rooms at South Nassau Communities Hospital as well as Long Island Jewish are now stocked and operational. These rooms are a lifesaver to families of those who are hospitalized. These rooms cost thousands of dollars to maintain. If you'd like to partner with us in stocking these rooms, please donate at www.achiezer.org.

SHIVA MINYANIM

During the wintertime short days, it is harder than ever for those sitting shiva to have the requisite 10 men for a mincha/maariv minyan. Just last year we launched a special WhatsApp Group dedicated for this purpose and dozens of families in the community have been able to benefit. If you're able to join this group and help participate in these desperately needed minyanim, please email arosenberg@achiezer.org. Social distancing and masks are required for all shiva minyanim.

MEIS MITZVAH ASSISTANCE

We continue to receive numerous requests for Meis Mitzvah situations where families are unable to gather the requisite 10 men needed for funerals. A new WhatsApp Group was also launched last year in this regard and since then has been able to help dozens of families. If you are local during the day in any capacity and possibly able to help, please email arosenberg@achiezer.org to be added to this WhatsApp Group.

CIMBY SPORT

We are proud to announce the race that you have all been waiting for... CIMBY Sport! So many of you have reached out, asking whether or not we'd be able to host our annual CIMBY Run this year. Thankfully, with a little bit of creativity we worked out a way to do it virtually. Please keep your eyes on your inboxes as we will launch this event shortly.

It's been a long eight months and it seems we have a ways to go. As a reminder, our entire staff is working, at both of our offices, and ready to service the community in any way that we can be helpful. Our 24 hour urgent Hotline 516-791-4444 can be accessed seven days a week.

Wishing the entire community a safe, healthy and warm winter,

Team Achiezer
